That felt like one of the longest offseasons to date, but it was beautiful in so many ways. The Birds won the Superbowl which I’m still celebrating every time I drink a titos & wooder (low cal/SoCal.) Carson Wentz seems to be even better than he was prior to injury (thank you god!) The Eagles had a great draft, and most importantly Fantasy football is BACK, which is what I live for!
So for starters, here's an appetizer for you as it’s a big draft week/weekend and the start of the season looms.
Here's a few guys I’ve been keying on based on upside and potential to breakout this year....
RB: Royce Freeman, Broncos
Don’t say yea I already knew about this guy, because NO YOU DIDN’T. He was an absolute stud when he was at Oregon. He's is super shifty but also seems to, in the words of the late great Gary Bertier “LOVE ME SOME CONTACT PETEY!!"
Denver now has a QB who has proven that he can move the ball down field, and an upgraded O-line. There will be plenty of opportunities for this guy to break out and show he is the back. I wouldn’t be too concerned with Devontae Booker, I think this might be a committee for a few games but Royce will take over once they see him run all over. He’s a good mid round pick up with RB2, potentially RB1 upside. Please @ me.
WR: Taywan Taylor, Titans
Did you see how fast this cat is? Good lord, absolute cheetah out there. He even got the attention of LBJ the King. Very, very below average year last season. But from the articles I’ve read he’s really worked on his hands and his strength in the offseason to compliment his flat out lightning quick speed. With a new coaching staff, not to mention Matt LaFleur as OC (formerly Rams OC, highest scoring offense in the NFL last season) I think that Taylor could see his role really blossom this year. He’ll be there in later rounds and could be a low risk high reward pick.
TE: David Njoku, Browns
Every year I convince myself that whatever team is featured on Hardknocks (in this season it’s the Browns) that they will be unstoppable. But unfortunately it's just production value and hype music mostly.
However there is always going to be a few players that make you say “hold on a second, this cat can play.”
David Njoku is a specimen. He’s got a big frame and for whatever reason they just decided to start leveraging him in the end zone. I think he could be touchdown dependent most weeks with the receiving core they have in place but if they’re in the redzone he seems to be the go to guy. Could be a nice pick if you miss out on the early TE selections with a modest floor but super high ceiling.
