Many thought Dallas Goedert would be a late first round pick. But when day two of the NFL draft started, he was still on the board.
His slide would end when the Eagles moved up three spots to select the dynamic tight end with the 49th overall pick.
Goedert was a machine at South Dakota State..
2014: 8 receptions | 100 yards
2015: 26 receptions | 484 yards | 3 TDs
2016: 92 receptions | 1,293 yards | 11 TDs
2017: 72 receptions | 1,111 yards | 7 TDs
... but this isn't the FCS, this is the NFL.
Between learning the offense, growing as a blocker, shoring up his route running, and adjusting to the overall speed of the game, Geodert has an uphill battle.
From all indications, so far he has been up for the task ...
But what can we realistically expect from the rookie tight end this season?
- In 2017 there were five tight ends selected higher than Goedert.
OJ Howard, Buccaneers,19th overall:
14 games | 26 receptions | 432 yards | 6 TDs
Evan Engram, NYG, 23rd overall:
15 games | 64 receptions | 722 yards| 6 TDs
David Njoku, Browns, 29th overall:
16 games | 32 receptions | 386 yards| 4 TDs
Gerald Everett, Rams, 44th overall:
16 games | 16 receptions | 244 yards | 2 TDs
Adam Shaheen, Bears, 45th overall:
13 games | 12 receptions | 127 yards | 3 TDs
- In 2016 only Hunter Henry (35th overall) was selected higher than Dallas Geodert.
Henry was in a relatively similar situation to Goedert, as he had Antonio Gates playing ahead of him during his rookie season.
Hunter Henry, Chargers:
15 games | 36 receptions | 478 yards | 8 TDs
The Patriots drafted Rob Gronkowski with the 42nd overall pick of the 2010 draft..
16 games | 42 receptions | 546 yards | 10 TDs
A player that many compare to Goedert, is Travis Kelce. The Chiefs drafted Kelce with the 63rd pick in the 2013 draft, but he only played one game during his rookie season before going on the IR.
28 picks earlier, the Eagles selected the man who would go on to score the game winning touchdown in Super Bowl 52, Zach Ertz.
16 games | 36 receptions | 469 yards | 4 TDs
If you take the average of the 8 players that I listed, it comes out to:
15 games | 33 receptions | 425 yards | 5 TDs
If healthy, there is no reason to think that Goedert can't come close to those numbers this season.
Even with Zach Ertz playing ahead of him, Goedert has a chance to play a significant role.
The Eagles have a tight end friendly offense. Trey Burton and Brent Celek combined for 6 touchdowns last season, so the opportunities will be there. Keep in mind, Zach Ertz also missed two games last season due to injury.
If Goedert proves to be a willing blocker and can pick up the offense, he could be poised for an impressive rookie campaign.
It wouldn't be a shock to see Goedert catch around 30-40 balls, for somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 + yards and 4-6 touchdowns.
