Will Manny Machado be a member of the Philadelphia Phillies by this time tomorrow?
Or will he be traded to LA, or Milwaukee?
The roller coaster ride continues.
Regardless of reports, Machado and the Phillies is a marriage that just seems like it was supposed to happen.
- The font office factor
With the third overall pick in the 2010 draft, an Orioles front office led by president Andy MacPhail, director of baseball operations Matt Klentak, and director of amateur scouting Joe Jordan, drafted a shortstop out of Brito Miami Private School named Manny Machado.
Five years later, the Phillies, who were desperate for a change in direction and leadership, hired Andy MacPhail as their new team president on June 29th, 2015.
His first order of business was hiring his protegee Matt Klentak as general manager on October 25th, 2015.
Here we are in 2018, the Phillies are in first place, and Manny Machado is available.
It just so happens that the three lead executives that drafted Machado are here in Philadelphia.
Andy MacPhail: Team president
Matt Klentak: Vice president/general manager
Joe Jordan: Director, player development
-Long time coming
The Phillies and Orioles didn't just wake up yesterday and start negotiating. This has been an ongoing process since at least December.
The Orioles know what the Phillies have, and the Phillies know what the Orioles want.
- In or out?
This situation has been a roller coaster ride for weeks. One minute it seems that the Phillies are on the verge of landing Machado, and the next minute they are planning to wait until the offseason to sign him.
- The latest
As of late last night, Jon Morosi of MLB Network and Fox Sports, reported that Philadelphia was the "most likely destination" for Manny Machado.
However, new reports indicate that the Dodgers are now considered the “favorites” to land Machado.
It seems that no one has a clue as to what's really going on with Manny Machado. But the general sense is that he will be moved at some point after the final pitch in tonight's all-star game.
- If the price is right
The Phillies are in a very unique position.
They know Machado better than anyone else, and they also know the Orioles organization better than anyone else.
From all indications they feel confident that they will eventually land Machado at some point.
This is a player that the front office has scouted, drafted, and watched grow into one of the top players in all of baseball.
I compare this situation to a newly hired football coach that brings in "his guys" to implement the new system.
MacPhail and Klentak want Machado.
Why the hell else would Andy MacPhail be here if it's not to land Manny Machado?
Like I mentioned, the Phillies and Orioles know what each other has, and what each other want.
According to both Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi, the Phillies are comfortable with offering a package centered around # 2 prospect (73 overall) Adonis Medina.
That should be enough to entice the Orioles.
I want the Phillies to land Machado as bad as anyone, but at the end of the day, he is still a rental.
If a team like the Dodgers completely overpay, then so be it.
But whether it's now or in the offseason, I feel that at some point this marriage will eventually happen.
