Next up in my crosshairs, Lonzo Ball and the rest of the Lakers (6-8).
Sixers (7-6) finish off their five game road trip tonight in the Staples Center. So far the trip has gone decently.
At 2-2 through four games, the loss to the Warriors was expected but the one to the Kings last Thursday was a disappointment. Golden State has far too much fire power but it was great seeing them mix it up with the best team in the league.
The Kings game two nights prior to Golden State was one that the Sixers should have had. Philadelphia had an opportunity at the end of the game but everyone on the court seemed out of sync on the final possession. That game against Sacramento is one that this team will win later this year if they find themselves in the same situation. The Sixers are the fourth youngest team in the NBA and with experience this team will learn how to close out games better.
Even with the disappointing loss last week Philadelphia finds itself with an opportunity to finish the west coast swing 3-2.
The Sixers will go toe to toe against the third youngest team in the league when they tip-off tonight vs the Los Angeles Lakers.
LA comes into this game boasting the 4th best defensive rating in the league at 101.7 but the Sixers have been on a tear this season averaging 108 point per game. The last time Philadelphia has scored under 100 points in a game was October 23rd in a win at Detroit.
But let’s cut the chit chat, this game is all about some big name players and parents. Lonzo Ball, Simmons, Embiid and LaVar Ball. I absolutely despise two of those names and they both end in Ball.
From day 1 LaVar has been nothing more than a loud mouth punk. He may be a marketing genius when it comes to acting like an idiot to get his name out there.
However his antics are going to continuously put a target on Lonzo’s back every night. We saw that the first game of the season when Patrick Beverly punished Lonzo and came out after the game and told reporters that LaVar was going to get Lonzo killed.
Pair that with Embiid and LaVar exchanging words via TMZ like they were McGregor and Mayweather and we have ourselves a full blown rivalry brewing.
The two stars that will take center stage tonight on the court are Ben and Ball. As we speak my mentions are blowing up with Lakers fans mad at me over a tweet about Ben being the better player.
Sorry to disappoint but Simmons is head and shoulders the better pro.
Basketball-Reference.com, aka the basketball fan holy bible, has stats on the Per 100 Possessions that goes all the way back to 1973-74. So over the course of 44 seasons worth of data there is only one player that averages a triple-double per 100 possessions?
Close, but no.
Ben Simmons stands alone.
The guy is doing things that NO PLAYER EVER has done and you want to tell me Lonzo Ball is a better player?
Simmons has as many triple-doubles this year (2) as Lonzo has double-doubles.
In fact, Ball isn’t even averaging a single-double!
9.5 PTS/6.7 RPG/7.2APG.
He’s has only scored 10+ four times this year. 11, that’s the lowest amount of total points Ben has scored in a game and it came against Boston, the best defense in the league.
This is starting to turn into a bloodbath as well.
How about Lonzo’s ability to make everyone else around him better?
This year the Lakers have an offensive rating of 99.2, that’s good for 28th out of 30 in the NBA. Last year, before Ball was a member of the team, the 26-56 Lakers had an offensive rating of 106.
I’m no mathematician but it seems like the offense has gotten worse since the arrival of Lonzo.
But surely Lonzo is a better shooter than Simmons, he was lights out at UCLA last year, right?
You are right, Lonzo WAS a better shooter last year. His first season in the NBA however he is a total dud shooting from pretty much anywhere. At college Ball was 41.2% from three and 55.1% overall. That is not too shabby.
You know what is shabby though, 25% from three, 31.3% from the field and even 50% from the charity stripe. That’s where Lonzo is shooting in the pros. If you read part I you know what Ben shoots as comparison but I’ll remind you, 60.6 % from FT and 49.7% FG. If Simmons missed his next 110 shots he’d STILL have a higher FG% than Lonzo. Ding ding ding!
Ben Simmons with another knock out!
Embiid is going to be hyped for this game and I expect him to give it to the LA crowd all night.
The Lakers don’t have great big men so Embiid should put himself down low all game like he did vs the Clippers and dominate. Expect another great showing from Philly’s new big three, Ben, Joel and RoCo. They are going to combined for 64 points tonight with Embiid leading the charge putting in 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Simmons will have a monster game tonight and is going to look to take on Lonzo 1:1 early and often.
Sixers will pull away early and turnovers will get LA back into it by the end of the third. It will be close down the stretch until Redick hits a clutch three and Philly wins this one 104-98!
