A negative turned positive. Wentz was putting the ball right where it needed to be on Sunday.
First quarter (9:11) 3rd and 3 from the LA 39 yard line, he drops an absolute dime to Nelson Agholor.
2nd quarter (7:43) from their own 11 yard line, he connected with Zach Ertz for 38 yards.
It helps that he had time and a solid run game, but he was on the money the all afternoon.
For the second week in a row Wentz was turnover free. He still takes his chances at times, but has been much more careful with the ball. There was a fumbled snap in the first quarter, but he was able to fall on the ball.
Making something out of nothing.
Wentz is always looking to make something happen.
There were two examples that really stood out on sunday.
1: Pass to LeGarette Blount in the first quarter (2:18) for 20 yards. This is just something that you can't teach.
2: His scramble for 12 yards in the second quarter (8:43) on 1st and 10 from the Chargers 31 yard line.
We talk about his mobility every week, but it's also his ability to extend a play and turn a negative into a positive.
Both drives ended with points.
As much as his in the pocket ability is a strength, it is also a weakness at times.
I wrote down one specific play where he stood in the pocket too long and almost threw an interception.
It came late in the second quarter (4:26) on a 2nd and 8 from the LA 35.
The Chargers got a nice rush and instead of scrambling outside of the pocket, he stayed in until the last very second and forced a throw to Zach Ertz in the middle of the field. It was nearly intercepted.
Now I love Wentz in the pocket, but he is so good on the run that I wish he would flush out a little more. I feel like it would lead to some home runs, similar to the Agholor touchdown week 1.
I thought this was Wentz second best game of the season, but with some help it could have been his best.
Something we talked about last week was his yards per attempt. This week it was at 7.80. His season average has gone from 7.03 to 7.20. A very nice improvement.
He was on the money with nearly every throw.
Like I mentioned, his ability to extend a play is a thing of beauty.
It was very tough to criticize anything from this weeks performance.
However, I am waiting for that signature performance where he completely takes over a game. I would bet on that coming sooner rather than later.
Grade: B +
This week: 17/31, 242 yards, 1 touchdown 91.1 rating
