The college boys are back at it for a week 5 preview unlike any other.
Do we have agreement this week?
Overall: 4-4 (2-0 locks)
Sam Darnold and USC take a visit to Pullman for a night game against a WSU team that’s 4-0 with all wins coming in the confines of their stadium so far. That ends in week 5 with USC showing how much space is between them and the rest of the Pac 12. Darnold gets himself back into the heisman picture with a monster game on the road.
VT +7.5 vs. Clemson
Clemson looked bad against Boston college last week so they should be sharper as they come into Blacksburg against a charged up 4-0 Hokie team who are looking to make a statement that they are a playoff contender. I’ve seen first hand how Lane Stadium can rock when a big team is in town, and even though they have a sketchy history against top ranked teams, they will keep this one close and cover the 7.
Georgia -7.5 @ Tennessee
Tough spot for Georgia to be in after a spotlight game last week against Miss St. Now they need to show up on the road against a Tennessee team that is looking for a statement to catapult their season as they go into the meat of SEC play. Georgia looks to be the real deal though and will be focused in Knoxville. Georgia by 2 TDs.
Lock of the week : Florida State -7 vs. Wake
Wake is 4-0 this year, and they haven’t looked this good since they won 11 games under Jim Grobe in 2006. Even though FSU isn’t in the greatest shape right now, the talent gap will be clear and the Seminoles will keep a pesky team at bay for a win and a cover.
Current Heisman: Saquon Barkley
He put the team on his back against Iowa, totaling 40 touches for over 300 total yards. The hurdle over an Iowa defender in the fourth quarter last week was reminiscent of last years Heisman winner, Lamar Jackson. He's got to be the leader at this point in the season.
Overall: 4-4 (2-0 lock)
USC-5 @ Washington State
Massive game to start the week in the Pacific Northwest. Sam Darnold and The Trojans take on Mike Leach, Luke Falk and crew tonight with first place in the Pac-12 South on the line. I think USC displays a strong running game here which frees up Darnold and the passing attack. Luke Flak tends to hold on to the ball too long and USC’s big D line has a feast. This will look like a shootout early but think USC pulls away late to cover.
Virginia Tech +7.5 vs Clemson
Justin Fuente has the Hokies back to national prominence (kills me to say that). Lane Stadium will be rocking come Saturday night as Enter Sandman blares through the stadium and Va Tech takes the field. Josh Jackson has been sound at quarterback early this year and I look for him to stay poised against the Tigers. Clemson and Alabama have looked like a cut above the rest of the college football field this year, but I like the Hokies at home with the points.
Ok State -10 @ Texas Tech
Coming off a loss to TCU last week I like Mason Rudolph, Mike Riley and his Mullet to right the ship and cover this week. Texas Tech does not have the defense to hold up the Cowboys like they did last week against Houston. With the game in Dallas, Tech doesn’t get a home field advantage and I like the Cowboys to cover in a shootout (the over under is 84.
Lock of the week: Alabama -27
Nick Saban has the tide rolling, and I see nothing changing against the embattled Ole Miss program. Last week easily covering against Vanderbilt 59-0 I see another blowout this week in Tuscaloosa. Ole Miss does not match up with The Tide anywhere on the field. Ole Miss committed 16 penalties in their loss against Cal, SIXTEEN. Don’t see them being able to clean it up in time to put up a fight against the Tide at LOUD Bryant Denny Stadium with a 9pm kickoff.
Current Heisman: Saquon Barkley.
After that 200 yard performance against Iowa, his YPC is 7.8, absurd. Don’t know where Penn State would be without him. Look for him to come close to another 200 yard game this week against the Hoosiers.
