The Eagles will be making their first of two trips to Los Angeles on Sunday for a 4 pm (eastern time) matchup with the Chargers.
The NFL is full of buzz words and phrases. When a team is facing a tough matchup we tend to use a variety of those phrases to describe that matchup such as...
"On the road"
"Coming off of a bye"
And the one the Eagles will be faced with THREE times this season- "traveling across the country."
So how hard is it for an East Coast team to fly across the country and then win a game?
So far this season true East Coast teams (Carolina - New England furthest I would go) are 2-1 when traveling to the West Coast.
All three matchups came in week 2.
Washington beat the LA Rams 27-20.
The Jets lost to Oakland 45-20.
Miami beat the LA Chargers 19-17.
To take it a step further; Last season true East Coast teams went 10-10 when traveling to the West Coast.
Seattle was 4-0 including a win over the Eagles.
(Eagles were 1-0 last season)
The LA Rams and 49ers were a combined 0-7, Arizona was 3-1, and Oakland was 2-0.
As far as the Chargers, they were 1-2, with the win coming against Jacksonville and the loses vs. Miami and Tampa Bay.
So it's not by any means impossible.
If this tells us anything, it's that the team you are traveling to play is much more important than the travel itself.
The Chargers were 5-11, Rams were 4-12 and the 49ers were 2-14. Meanwhile Seattle was 10-5-1, Arizona was 7-8-1 and Oakland finished 12-4.
Keep in mind- the Chargers are currently 0-3 and have already lost to an East Coast team at home.
The Eagles last win on the West Coast was November 3rd, 2013 @ Oakland. Yes, the Nick Foles 7 touchdown game.
(They are only 0-3 since)
The last time the Eagles traveled to play the Chargers was Sunday November 15th, 2009. They lost that game 31-23 in a matchup that featured Philip Rivers vs. Donovan McNabb.
This will not be the last time you read or hear about "traveling across the country." It's not easy, but traveling to the West Coast and flying home with a win CAN be done.
The Eagles will have to get used to the West Coast- they will play in Seattle 13 and Los Angels again in week 14.
